Of course, as prices can and often do change by the second, placing an order at market price at the second you see it may not be the price 10 seconds later. Still, the revolutionary notion of non-professional investors having access to Real Time Trading is likely the biggest reason for the rise of the many online brokerages like Ameritrade, E*trade, TD Waterhouse, etc.
